Verna Grace Bengtson, 94, Battle Lake, died Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Pioneer Cottages in Fergus Falls.
Verna was born December 22, 1914 in Leaf Mountain Township, rural Battle Lake, to Iver and Carrie (Sampson) Jacobson. She was baptized and confirmed in Leaf Mountain Lutheran Church and attended rural School District #70 in Leaf Mountain Township. Verna graduated from Battle Lake High School in 1933.
On December 22, 1939, Verna and Herbert Bengtson were married in the Lutheran parsonage in Battle Lake. They traveled to California for their honeymoon, after which they returned to rural Battle Lake where they farmed. Herbert also worked at the Mobil Station in Battle Lake and later purchased the business, calling it Bengtson Oil Company. Herbert passed away in 1966 and Verna lived in a variety of places in Otter Tail County prior to moving to Alexandria, where she lived for nearly 30 years. While in Alexandria, she worked as a senior companion, driving the elderly to appointments and helping with other needs as well.
She was a member of Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the ladies aid. Verna enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting, walking and traveling.
She is survived by one daughter, Karen (Denton) West of Sedalia, CO; one son, Clinton (Janet) Bengtson of Battle Lake; six grandchildren, Shannon (Chuck) Worum of Underwood, Curt (Debbie) of Greeley, CO, Craig (Lisa) of Battle Lake, Chris of Battle Lake, Cory (Tena) Bengtson of Rothsay and Katherine (Luke) McGuire of Omaha, NE; nine great-grandchildren, Trista, Aaron, Tanya, Kaila, Jessica, Amy, Seth, Joshua and Abigail; one great-great-grandchild, Jazmine; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jenny (Gary), Amber, Amanda and Andrea; four stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Nigel, Shelbie, Molly and Gary Jr.; and one sister, Bernice Westad of Alexandria.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; three sisters, Minnie Holt, Alice Swenson and Nora Wedin; and four brothers, Roy, Earl, Sam and Arthur Jacobson.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Battle Lake and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Services will be held Thursday, December 3 at 11 a.m. at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, rural Battle Lake, with the Rev. Tom Peterson officiating.
Burial will be at the church cemetery.
