Norma Elaine Norling, 76, Brainerd, died peacefully November 24, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, after a brief illness.

Norma was born December 25, 1932 in Barrett to Clarence and Elvira (Larson) Soberg.

She graduated from the West Central School of Agriculture (WCSA) in 1949, a University of Minnesota agricultural high school located on what is now the campus of the University of Minnesota-Morris. Always independent, Norma spent up to six months a year away from home attending WCSA, from ages 14 to 17.

She married Worrell “Whirley” W. Norling on September 26, 1953 in Alexandria in a double ceremony with her brother and sister-in-law, Enfred and Percy Norling.

Over the years, Norma enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling, snowmobiling, bird watching, sewing blankets for veterans (achieving special recognition from the VFW for her hand-made afghans) and cheering on the Minnesota Twins.

She was an accountant at Honeywell in the Twin Cities for nearly two decades, where she was a President’s Award winner. She was a former co-owner of Little Pine Resort on Gull River in Brainerd, along with Whirley and special lifelong friends, the late Mike and Arlene Wilcox. There they made many wonderful friends and memories. She also worked as bookkeeper at The Quarterdeck Supper Club on Gull Lake prior to a brief retirement before Whirley took ill. She provided his care at home for more than a decade. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and VFW Post 1647 of Brainerd.

Survivors include her son, Mike Norling of Brainerd; daughters, Shelley (Ross ) Pottos, Sauk Rapids, and Kelley (Tom) Eldien, Duluth; grandchildren, Jackie (Dameion) (Norling) Maupin, Boise, ID, Chris (Jess) Norling, Brainerd, Daniel Norling, Idaho, Presley and Brody Eldien, Samantha and Reed Potts; great-grandchildren, Isiac and Kylie; brother, Roger (Ardis) Soberg of Barrett; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; sister, Virginia Soberg; and her parents.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 3 at 11 a.m. at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd with the Rev. David Holte officiating.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Fellowship will follow at the VFW at noon.

A private burial will be held at a later date at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley.

Arrangements are with Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Brainerd.
