Burton was born February 7, 1917 to Bernt and Clara (Jergenson) Johnson in Rolling Forks Township, Pope County. He was baptized at Rolling Forks Lutheran Church and grew up on farms in Pope County, attending country school in Districts #2, #14 and #69 through the 8th grade. He was confirmed at Chippewa Falls Lutheran Church in Terrace and as a young man entered the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked near Gooseberry Falls north of Duluth.

On February 22, 1946, Burton was united in marriage to Myra Jean Simonson in Glenwood. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Boyd, Avis, Debra and Brenda. They farmed at various locations throughout Pope County before purchasing a farm in White Bear Township north of Starbuck in 1963. Myra died in 2003.

In December of 2004, Burton moved from the farm to Holly Ridge Manor where he lived until February of 2008 when he moved to Lakeview Good Samaritan Center in Glenwood. In June of 2008 he became a resident at Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, where he continued to reside until his death.

Burton was a member of the Farmers Union Cooperative, the Starbuck Senior Citizens group, various card clubs and Indherred Lutheran Church. He enjoyed Minnesota Twins baseball, gardening, playing cards, playing pool, hunting, fishing and dancing. Burton had a quiet kindness about him and will be remembered by those who knew him as a good listener who was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Burton is survived by his four children, Boyd (Diana) Johnson of Mitchell, SD, Avis (Ted) Litzner of St. Cloud, Debra (Dale) Hausmann of Staples, and Brenda (Bruce) Gilbertson of Starbuck; 11 grandchildren, Wayne (Kristi) Johnson, Kirk (Julie) Johnson, Heather (Bill) Boyer, Roxanne (Vern) Lorenson, Matthew (Vicki) Parker, Nathan (Laura) Hausmann, Shannon Hausmann, Jessica Hausmann, Nicole Hausmann, Shawn Gilbertson and Todd Gilbertson; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Opal Gerde of Sedan; a brother, Maurice (Joann) Johnson of Sedan; brothers-in-law, Leslie Moe of Glenwood and Allen (Ellen) Simonson of Minneapolis; special friend, Bernice Klevann of Starbuck; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Myra, in 2003; brothers, Julian, Irwin and Phillip; sister, Elaine Moe; brother-in-law, Fred Gerde; and sister-in-law, Virginia Johnson.

Funeral Services were held October 27 at Indherred Lutheran Church in Starbuck with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment was at Indherred Lutheran Cemetery in Starbuck.

Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
