Werner A. Hausmann, 88, died October 5, 2009 in Alexandria.
Werner A. Hausmann, 88, died October 5, 2009 in Alexandria.
Werner was born in Miltona Township, Douglas County on May 18, 1921 to William and Emma (Beyer) Hausmann. He was baptized June 19, 1921 and confirmed June 9, 1935 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of West Miltona. He attended school through 8th grade and then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) at age 16. He also worked on the William Schultz farm from 1939 to 1942.
Werner entered the United States Army in 1942. He saw extensive military action as a truck driver for General Patton’s 3rd Army in the European Theater during World War II. His group was sent into Bastogne, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge to rescue the 101st Airborne Division. By the time Werner was discharged in 1945, he had earned four Battle Stars for his service. He was a proud member of the American Legion for more than 40 years.
On June 6, 1948 Werner married Virginia Wussow. In 1950, they moved to her parents’ farm, where they farmed for 36 years before retiring to Alexandria in 1986. He was a faithful member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church and, later, Zion Lutheran Church.
Werner loved driving. It didn’t matter if it was the trucks in WWII to the tractors in the fields. Even when he retired in 1986, he still came to the farm to help plant and harvest. He still helped on the farm this spring. He was a true dad and friend. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his children, Kevin (Linda) Hausmann of New Brighton and Jan (Joyce) Hausmann of Alexandria; grandchildren, Karl Hausmann, Elizabeth Hausmann and Benjamin Hausmann; and sister-in-law, Violet Hausmann.
Werner was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia; brothers, Walter, Edwin, Norman and Herbert; sister, Elda Jantzen; and grandson, John Werner Hausmann.
Funeral services were held October 10 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria with the Rev. Terry Finnern and the Rev. William Moeller officiating. Music was provided by Lynette Finnern. Inurnment was at Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery in Leaf Valley with Michael Hausmann, Delmer Jantzen, Alan Lassanke, Wally Walz, Roger Jantzen, Wayne Hausmann, Derald Hausmann, Duane Hausmann, Gerald Hausmann, Dale Hausmann, David Hausmann and LeRoy Hausmann serving as pallbearers.
