Isabelle was born August 1, 1919 in Graceville to Bert and Sue Platto. She graduated from Central High School in Alexandria in 1938 and furthered her education at McPhail’s School of Music in Minneapolis. She received her bachelor of arts degree in piano and voice.
Izzy served her country during World War II as a corporal in the U.S. Army, Women’s Army Corps (WAC). She was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands.
Isabelle was united in marriage to Carl “Bob” Robert Thompson on June 6, 1949 at St. Mary’s Church in Alexandria. After their marriage, Bob and Izzy moved to Murdock for eight years before returning to Alexandria, where she resided for the rest of her life.
Izzy stayed at home raising her seven children and teaching piano lessons. She also directed the St. Mary’s Church Choir for several years. Isabelle was a past president of VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion. She was a very patriotic lady and every May you would find her selling poppies.
Isabelle was an inspiration and joy to all who knew her. She lived for her children and grandchildren and loved her family and extended family. She never met a stranger and always lived her life for others.
Izzy also volunteered at Bethany Home at the fruit cart and coffee shop. She also taught CCD and sang at several weddings and funerals. She will be remembered for making people laugh and her many sayings such as, “I’m Irish and Dutch and I didn’t amount to much,” and “See you around like a doughnut.”
She is survived by five children, Jan Duhnke of Wichita, KS, Christine Mojica (Alberto) of Cuernavaca, Mexico, Debra Rode Thompson (Terril) of Alexandria, Dr. Robert Thompson (Sarah) of Iowa City, IA, Dr. Mary Fusco of Seattle, WA; 17 grandchildren, Karl Duhnke; Lya, Kristian, Teddy Mojica; Shannon and Michael Haberman; Sophie Fusco; Angie, Catherine, Robert II, Stephanie, Carl, Tegan, Ray, Robert III, Vanna, Susanna Thompson; 13 great-grandchildren; special nieces and nephews, Lynda Wosmek, Sheri and Patty Platto, Billy Platto (deceased); Bert and Nancy Westhoff, Wendy Potts, Jodi Vargas, Kelly Cascani; Julie Heale, Tom and Tim Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl “Bob” Robert Thompson; and daughters, Teresa Mary and Susan Rae Thompson.
Mass of Christian Burial was held September 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria with Father Steve Binsfeld officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military honors were by VFW Post 936 and American Legion Post 87.

My beautiful and beloved Aunt Izzy is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Bill and Elsie(Carlson) Platto of Alexandria, Val Platto Carder of Los Gatos, CA and Patrick (Louise) Platto of Milwaukee, WI.
