When they moved back to Villard, Burl went back to school, attending Alexandria Technical College. He then went on to work at Douglas Machine and Weyerhauser for a few years, where he developed an interest in packaging machinery. He was very proud of his employees and his company. By the time Burl retired on June 30, 2005, the business had more than 50 employees.
Burl also found time to serve his community. He was mayor of Villard for two terms and was a member of the Villard Lions and the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and a good book. He will be remembered for his love of family, his creativity in designing and engineering, and his passion for flying and airplanes.
