David Anderson, 89

David Leonard Anderson, 89, Evansville, died Monday, August 3, 2009 at Crestview Manor in Evansville.

David, born January 20, 1920, was the sixth child of Gustave William and Caroline (Millard) Anderson. He grew up in Lund Township and attended school in Melby. He was baptized and confirmed at Christina Lake Church.

His first job was working on an ore boat on the Great Lakes. He entered the service in May 1942 where he trained as a combat medic. He was with the 16th Medical Regiment Battalion during the invasion of Italy and then with the 82nd Airborne. He returned home in October 1945.

David married Ruby Elenore Anderson on July 14, 1946 at Christina Lake Church in rural Melby. They built a house in Evansville, which they called home for more than 60 years. Ruby passed away in January 2007.

David attended a school where he learned aircraft welding. He worked for Bellanca Aircraft from 1959 to 1980 as a welder and later as the head of the welding department. In 1980, he went to work for Eagle Aircraft; he retired in 1982. He was elected Evansville city clerk in 1962 and held that position for 40 years, resigning in January 2003. He served on the Evansville Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 188 where he was elected finance officer in 1949 and adjutant in 1974; resigning from both positions in 2004.

David was a firearm safety instructor from 1955 until he retired in 2000. He enjoyed all sports, hunting, fishing and especially the game of golf. He loved singing in the church choir and did so for more than 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; his parents; sisters, Dorothy, Henrietta and Armell; and brothers, William, Burton and Clinton.

He is survived by one brother, James, of rural Evansville; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 7 at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Evansville. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 6 from 5 to 7 pm. at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Evansville and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at Mound Grove Cemetery in Evansville.
