Paul Arthur Zander, 65, Alexandria, died February 25, 2009 at his home.
Paul was born in Howard Lake on May 12, 1943 to Gerald and Helen (Smith) Zander. He grew up in Howard Lake and graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1961. After graduation Paul went to work for Fillbrandt and Son Excavating in Excelsior.
On August 6, 1964 Paul married Carol Scheiber and to this union five children were born.
In 1971 he took over his father’s business, Zander Construction Inc., which he continued successfully for 26 years. In 1997 Paul and Carol moved to Alexandria where he worked as a heavy equipment operator, first for Zacher Excavating then Tradesman Construction, retiring in 2007.
Paul enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was also a NASCAR fan, enjoyed hunting, fishing and his 1955 Chevy. He is a member of the Alexandria Eagles, the Viking Sportsmen’s Club, and was a member of the Howard Lake Lions.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; sons, Michael of Battle Lake, Steven of England, James (Christina) of Annandale and David (Amy) of Maple Lake; grandchildren, Bradley, Travis, Stephanie, Jennifer, Francesca, Sebastien, Joseph, Noah, Alison, Nathan; great-grandson, Benjamin; his mother, Helen; brothers, Bruce (Carol) and Brian (Diana), all of Howard Lake; sister, Nyla (Wayne) Paulson of Kimball. Further survivors are sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Val and JoAnn LePage of Waverly and Sylvan and Kathy Stephani from Minnetonka; along with a host of many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Mark; granddaughter, Samantha; father, Gerald; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Josephine Scheiber.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, February 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly with Father Martin Shallbetter officiating. Music was provided by Mae Wannarka, organist, and St. Mary’s Church Choir.
Interment was at Howard Lake Cemetery. Casket bearers were Wayne Paulson, Dan Zander, Tim LePage, Bob Stephani, Gene Sullivan and Jim Workman. Honorary casket bearers were Paul’s grandchildren and great-grandchild.
Arrangements were with Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
