Virgil L. “Cob” Fairbanks, 61, of Mahnomen, died on Friday, March 27, 2009 at his home in Mahnomen. Memorial services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at the Pine Point School in Pine Point, with Kevin Stock officiating.

Sept. 11, 1947-March 27, 2009

Virgil L. “Cob” Fairbanks, 61, of Mahnomen, died on Friday, March 27, 2009 at his home in Mahnomen.

Virgil Lee Fairbanks was born the son of Thomas and Marie (Brunette) Fairbanks on Sept. 11, 1947 at White Earth. He attended elementary school in Pine Point, high school in Park Rapids, and welding school in Grand Rapids, Minn. He then moved to Minneapolis, where he utilized his welding skills at the American Iron Supply Company for 37 years. He received numerous awards for the artistic sculptures he had welded.

Virgil married Bobbi Marshall on April 8, 1978 in Minneapolis. He enjoyed the outdoors, playing golf, horseshoes, and cribbage. He loved tinkering around the house, keeping busy. He was a great Elvis impersonator.

Surviving Virgil are his wife, Bobbi Fairbanks of Mahnomen; five children, Racheal (Jason) Deitchler of Ramsey, Minn., Thomas Fairbanks of Mahnomen, Rachel Fairbanks of Mahnomen, Donald (Lori) Fairbanks of Rice Lake, Minn., and Brandon Fairbanks of Mahnomen; his brothers and sisters, Angeletta (George) Ross of Cass Lake, Minn., William (Judy) Henry of Minneapolis, Joyce (Walter) Yellowhammer of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Rena Vizenor of Mahnomen, Paulette (Larry) Molin of Hampton, Va., Vicki (Roger) Sternberg of Detroit Lakes, Karen Fairbanks of Burlington, Ky., James (Denise) Fairbanks, USN, of Gulfport, Miss., Margaret (Steve) Eischens of Sauk Rapids, Minn., Tim (Darlene) Fairbanks of Ogema, Pamela (Ron) Fairbanks of Ponsford, Thomas (Sue) Fairbanks of Wonderlake, Ill., Charles (Sandy) Fairbanks of Winthrop Harbor, Ill., Joann (Don) Peters of Lake Mary, Fla., and Betty Chevalier of Blaine, Minn.; as well as 12 grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Thomas Fairbanks (1991) and Marie Fairbanks (2007); three brothers, Robert Fairbanks (1991), Gordon Henry, Sr. (1999) and Joseph Fairbanks (2005); his sister, Verna Jorgenson (2006) and infant sisters, LaVonne Henry, Florence Fairbanks and Veronica Fairbanks.

Memorial services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 31 at the Pine Point School in Pine Point, with Kevin Stock officiating. Cease Funeral Home of Park Rapids is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be left online at www.ceasefuneralhome.com.
