Michael J. “Mike” Hagel, 49, of New York Mills, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at his home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Lakeland Hospice.
Michael John Hagel was born to Leroy Millard Hagel and Luella (Schwartz) Eskola on April 7, 1959 at St. James Hospital in Perham. Mike grew up on the family farm in Heinola. In 1970 the Hagel family moved to New York Mills, where Mike attended New York Mills High School.
Mike was employed with Tuffy’s in Perham for two years, and then later employed with North American Restoration until 1986, when he came home to take care of his son, Joey. The next year he was employed by Ethan Curtis Masonry. Mike later owned and operated M & D Construction, where he worked with home weatherization programs through Otter Tail-Wadena Community Action in New York Mills until 2004, when he retired due to illness.
Mike lived his life to the fullest and he treasured being a father to Joey, who was his pride and joy. Mike had many, many good friends and he made new friends wherever he went. He valued everything he was given or earned, and his gifts to others had special meaning behind it after he thought it through.
Mike had numerous hobbies throughout his life, including fishing, hunting, camping, cooking and gardening. He loved gardening and worked many hours in the garden so he could share his fresh vegetables with family and friends. Mike enjoyed shooting pool on leagues and won many trophies. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, snowmobiles, going to garage sales and tinkering on his vehicles. He loved all people and always welcomed others to his home with open arms and made sure they had refreshments to share with him.
He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, including his son, Joseph (Megan) Hagel of Detroit Lakes; mother, Luella (Toivo) Eskola of New York Mills; special friend of 18 years, Pam Hanson of Wadena; brother, James (Robyn) Hagel of Ottertail; sisters Marlene (Wayne) Johnson of Bemidji, Teresa ( Jon Ebersviller) Stoderl of Perham and Brenda (Doug) Hill of Brainerd; a niece and five nephews as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.
Preceding Mike in death was his father, Leroy Hagel.
Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, March 30 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills, with the Rev. Andy Tumberg, Chaplain Jim Knoll and Doug Hill officiating. All of Mike’s close friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills. Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills was entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be left online at karvonenfuneralhome.com.
