Richard J. Mueller, 75, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 at St. Mary’s Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Richard was born to Joseph and Charlotte (Welter) Mueller on June 30, 1933 at home in Homestead Township, rural New York Mills. Richard was baptized on Oct. 22, 1944 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Butler, Minn. The baptism was witnessed and sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Steinbach.
Richard attended Kolp and Davies country school until the 5th grade. He graduated from New York Mills High School with the class of 1952. Following graduation, Richard joined the United States Army, where he was assigned to the 187th Airborne Regiment Combat Team serving in Korea and Japan, and received an honorable discharge.
On Feb. 1, 1958, Richard married Barbara Ann Dispensa. They made their home in Grand Rapids, Minn., where Richard joined the Blandin Paper Company. In 1983, Richard became a mill supervisor, and in 1993 retired from Blandin Paper Company after 35 years.
Richard was a life member of VFW Post 3289 in New York Mills; a member of American Legion Post 15 of Detroit Lakes; and a member of the Grand Rapids Goose Hunters.
Richard enjoyed fishing and guiding on Pipestone Lake in Canada; fishing on Devils Lake and hunting near Minnewaukan, N.D.; elk hunting in Colorado; and spending time at his hunting cabin near Hill City, Minn. In 2001, Richard moved to Detroit Lakes, where he enjoyed watching his granddaughters Abby and Katy play golf, hockey and ride horses.
Richard will be dearly missed by his daughter, Jayne (Mark) Waisanen of Detroit Lakes; two granddaughters; a sister, Salena Williamson Johnson of Portland, Ore.; many other relatives and a host of special friends.
Preceding Richard in death were his wife Barbara (January 1993); mother, Charlotte (1944); father, Joseph (1975); sister Myrtle (January 2000); and special surrogate parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dresser.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home in New York Mills, with the Rev. Ryan Stout officiating. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Dresser, Donald Dresser, Bud Welter, Peter Welter, Norman Koehler, and David Leslie. Military Honors will be provided by the Charles D. Center VFW Post 3289 of New York Mills. Interment will be in St. Henry’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Perham.
