Herman ThiedeFormer Spruce Grove Township resident Herman A. Thiede, 103, of La Crosse, Wis., passed away Monday, January 12, 2009 at the Onalaska Care Center, holding the hands of his daughters. A mass of Christian burial was held Thursday, Jan. 15 at St. James the Less Catholic Church in La Crosse, with the Rev. Delbert Malin officiating. Entombment was in the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse.

Former Spruce Grove Township resident Herman A. Thiede, 103, of La Crosse, Wis., passed away Monday, January 12, 2009 at the Onalaska Care Center, holding the hands of his daughters.
Herman Arthur Thiede was born to John and Bessie (Mueller) Thiede on Sept. 2, 1905, in rural Frazee/Wolf Lake.
Herman was a World War II veteran and was very proud of his country. He shared many stories of his experiences as an Army Air Corps veteran. He took the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., on Oct. 8, 2008, to see the World War II Veterans Memorial.
Surviving Herman are his daughters, Diane (Timothy) Niebuhr of Holmen, Wis., and Kathleen (James) Williams of Ocala, Fla.; three grandchildren, five stepchildren and many step-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Thiede of La Crosse and Christian Thiede of Great Falls, Mont.; one sister, Laura Kumara of Minneapolis; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition, Herman is survived by the staff and volunteers at Onalaska Care Center who became a part of his family. The loving care and kindness he received over the years will never be forgotten and will be cherished by his family, who hope that the smiles and laughter he gave to the staff and friends at the Onalaska Care Center will be long remembered.
Preceding Herman in death were his wife, Charlotte Thiede; his parents; four brothers; and five sisters.
A mass of Christian burial was held Thursday, Jan. 15 at St. James the Less Catholic Church in La Crosse, with the Rev. Delbert Malin officiating. Entombment was in the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse.
Dickinson Family Funeral Home of La Crosse assisted the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers. memorials may be given to the Herman A. Thiede Memorial Fund. Proceeds of the memorial will be used toward the purchase of a marble bench to be placed outside the Onalaska Care Center in Herman’s memory.
