Bertha L. “Birdie Lou” Holmstrom, 81, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Arthur, N.D. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service to follow at 5 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Zion Lutheran Church in Gwinner, with interment to follow at Gwinner City Cemetery, Gwinner. West-Kjos Funeral Home is providing arramgements for the family. Bertha L. “Birdie Lou” Holmstrom, 81, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Arthur, N.D.
Bertha Lucille Golberg was born the daughter of Alvin and Clara (Wood) Golberg on July 21, 1927 in Fargo. She was raised and educated in Horace, N.D., until her senior year. Birdie finished her final year of high school at Oak Grove High School in Fargo. She received her teaching degree from Moorhead State University and taught in Gwinner, N.D. Birdie married Allen Holmstrom on Nov. 23, 1950 in Horace. They made their home in Gwinner, and continued to live there until Allen's retirement in 1982. They then moved to Detroit Lakes and made their home on Lake Sallie.
Birdie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Gwinner, and also became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a Cub Scout leader in Gwinner. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles in Detroit Lakes. Birdie enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family, and especially her granddaughters.
Birdie is survived by her daughter, Sandy Holmstrom of Arthur; two sons, Larry Holmstrom of Wyndmere, N.D., and Curtis (Brenda) Holmstrom of Arthur; three granddaughters; one brother, Al Golberg of Pelican Rapids; two sisters, Henriette Odell of Sitka, Alaska, and Gail (Dennis) Flumerfelt of Spokane, Wash.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Birdie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Allen (2008); and an infant daughter, Gail Holmstrom.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service to follow at 5 p.m.
