Katharine Gloria Anderson was born the daughter of Adolph and Ruth Anderson on May 12, 1925 in North Branch. Her parents were lifelong residents of the community, and she grew up with her family on a farm about one mile north of town. Katharine attended MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis, where she received a bachelor’s degree in piano and voice. This was also where she met Dale Smith and later married him, on Jan. 19, 1946.

They later moved to Detroit Lakes, where they operated a successful business, the Oak Manor Motel, for 25 years. While living in Detroit Lakes, Katharine was the lead organist at the Trinity Lutheran Church.
After moving back to North Branch, Katharine participated in many church activities, including Bible study and WELCA. She played in the bell choir, volunteered her talents with craft bazaars, and volunteered at the Green Acres gift shop. She was also an organist at the Salem Lutheran Church, and worked for many years at Main Street Fashions, a clothing store in North Branch.
Katharine’s favorite activities included sewing, knitting, quilting, reading books, visiting with her friends and spending time with her family. She also loved tending to her flowers and watching birds at her feeder.

She will be very much missed by her loved ones, including daughter Cindy (Gary Nelson of Wyoming; son, Daniel (Charlene) Smith of North Branch; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Larry Brinkman and many other relatives and friends.
