Kenneth George Verschaetse, 79, of Marshall, formerly of Ghent, died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center in Marshall.

Kenneth George Verschaetse, 79, of Marshall, formerly of Ghent, died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center in Marshall.

Kenneth was born to George and Lena (Versluys) Verschaetse on February 25, 1933 in Moline, Illinois. As a child, Ken moved with his family to Ghent and later graduated from Marshall High School.

Ken was united in marriage to Shirley Boerboom on August 20, 1951. This union was blessed with five children. Ken served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, the couple moved to Ghent, where they raised their family.

Ken worked as an agribusiness sales consultant, most recently with Cenex Harvest States.

He loved to hunt and fish with friends and his children. He enjoyed many fishing trips to Lake of the Woods. Sharing time with family was important to Ken. He loved nothing better than making pancake breakfasts and fish fries with the family at the lake cabin on Lake L’Homme Dieu in Alexandria. Ken adored his grandchildren and loved attending their many activities.

He is survived by his four sons, Terry (and Cindy) of Marshall, Bill (and Judy) of Alexandria, Tim (and Ruth) of Faribault, Randy (and Lisa) of New Ulm; and daughter, Mary (and Dan) Van Hauwaert of Marshall, 10 grandchildren, Bailey, Madi, Nathan, Paul, Joe and Sam Verschaetse, Alissa (and Chris) Salvato, Kristin (and Lance) Andries, Ethan and Kaylee Van Hauwaert, two great-grandsons, Alex and Ben Salvato.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; father, George, mother, Lena; and brother, Eugene.

Mass of Christian Burial for Kenneth was held Thursday, February 28 at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent.

Interment followed the service at St. Eloi Catholic Cemetery in Ghent. Military rites were provided by U.S. American Legion Post 564 of Ghent.
