Earlene LaVanche Brosh, 67, Glenwood, died February 1, 2013 at Lakeview Good Samaritan Society in Glenwood.
Earlene was born June 28, 1945 in Alexandria. She was one of seven girls born to Eddie and Evelyn (Benson) Gylsen. Earlene grew up with her family on a farm in rural Alexandria before they moved into Alexandria in 1959.
When she was 13, Earlene moved to the Twin Cities to babysit her sister’s child and help with the household chores. This allowed her to have some extra spending money, which most other young people didn’t have. While living with her sister’s family, Earlene attended Hopkins High School for two years. It was here that Earlene found her love of painting. She experimented with tempera, watercolors and oils, and she enjoyed the encouragement she received from the art staff. Halfway through high school in Hopkins, Earlene got lonesome for her family and moved back to Alexandria and graduated from high school there. Later, she moved back to the Twin Cities to perform clerical work at the bureau of engraving.
Earlene was introduced to Phillip Brosh through a mutual friend and in 1971, they were united in marriage at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood. The couple made their home in Glenwood and bought the local bait shop from Phil’s dad and continued to own and operate it for the next 40-plus years. Earlene enjoyed painting, fishing with Phil and spending time with her family.
When Earlene needed assistance with her daily care, she moved into the Lakeview Good Samaritan Center in Glenwood, where Phillip eventually joined her. Phillip passed away there on January 16, 2013 and Earlene passed away on February 1, 2013.
Earlene is survived by her sisters, ReLou (Harland) Schwichtenberg of Waterville, Ardelle (Donald) Bowden of Battle Creek, MI, Marvyl (Jerry) Sullivan of Andover, Vernelle Gylsen of Beverton, OR, and Darnelle (Dave) Hurd of Battle Creek, MI; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Evelyn Gylsen; husband, Phillip Brosh; and sister, Charmaine Grandchamp.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Visitation will be the morning of the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood.
