Peter R. Daas, 98, died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Evansville Care Center.
Peter was born February 15, 1914 in Urbank to Anton and Caroline Rose (Freske) Daas. He was one of 12 children. He grew up on the family farm in Leaf Mountain Township and attended Sacred Heart parochial school in Urbank.
On January 28, 1942, Peter joined the U.S. Army. He was a part of the 365 Fighter Squadron stationed in England from 1942 to 1945. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1945.
On June 24, 1947, Peter was united in marriage to Anna E. Wagner at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Millerville. Anna was also one of 12 children. Peter and Anna began their life together on a farm about a mile south of Millerville. Later they purchased a dairy farm north of Millerville in Leaf Mountain Township, where they lived and farmed until 1983 when they retired and moved to Brandon. They then became members of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Brandon. Anna died on June 12, 2001. Peter then moved to the Crestview Manor, now known as the Evansville Care Center.
Peter was a member of American Legion Post 527 for 67 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1995 for 58 years.
Peter loved farming, gardening and playing cards, especially 500 and whist. Whenever they visited relatives and friends or whatever the occasion, cards were a part of the entertainment. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews as much as they enjoyed spending time with him. He was loved by the staff and residents of Evansville Care Center. Prayer was always an important part of his life and you could often find him praying the rosary. He also respected and prayed for the priests daily.
He is survived by one sister-in-law, Agnes Byrne of Millerville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Frank and wife Eva, John and wife Augusta, Anthony “Tony” and wife Irene, George, Bernard, and Isidore; five sisters, Mathilda and husband Andrew Debilzen, Anna and husband Henry Revering, Marie and husband Nick Faber, Rose and husband Peter Thoennes, and Pauline and husband Al Wagner, who is Anna’s brother.
