John “Jack” Kohan Jr., 68, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria after a brief illness.

John “Jack” Kohan Jr., 68, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria after a brief illness.
John was born April 4, 1944 in Minneapolis, the son of John and Norma (Stoneberg) Kohan Sr. He grew up in St. Anthony Village and graduated from University High School in Minneapolis.
Jack attended the University of Minnesota before joining the Minnesota National Guard. After his service, Jack worked for Northwestern Bell in Minneapolis.
On October 12, 1973 in Minneapolis, Jack was united in marriage to Cheryl Gross Tyau. They raised three daughters: Stefani, Margo and Jennifer, and a son, Corey.
Due to the split of AT&T into regional offices, Jack worked for AT&T and the family moved from Minneapolis to several different states, including Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
In 1998, Jack and Cheryl retired to Alexandria where the entire family could enjoy coming to their lake home and spending time together. In 1999, the Kohans traveled to Salt Lake City to purchase a small concessions business, selling Maui Wowi fruit smoothies at art fairs and festivals in Minnesota and North Dakota and they loved it. In fact, they are the longest-owned franchise in the Maui Wowi history.
Jack also enjoyed working in his garden. It was his little sanctuary. Between working in his garden, selling Maui Wowis and time spent with his family at the lake, retirement was wonderful.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; four children, Stefani and Dave Bueling of Lincoln, NE, Margo and John Shaw of Olathe, KS, Corey and Lora Kohan of Minneapolis, Jennifer Kohan and Douglas Talalla of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; sister, Nancy and John Jensen of Plymouth.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 2 at 2 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
Memorials are preferred to The Angel Foundation, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society – Minnesota Chapter, Juvenile Diabetes Research, National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Upper Midwest.
