Phyllis “Babe” Eigen, age 91, of Comfrey, died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Phyllis “Babe” Eigen, age 91, of Comfrey, died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Phyllis was born July 28, 1921 on the family farm near Verndale to Richard and Amelia (Monchamp) Downing. She graduated from Verndale High School in 1939, after which she attended De Guiles School of Cosmetology in Minneapolis.
Phyllis was employed at Grundmeyers Beauty Shop in New Ulm until she married Ray Eigen of Comfrey on October 7, 1941. While Ray served in the Air Force, she managed a beauty shop in Comfrey for Hattie Schotzko and later for Archie Krzmarzick. In later years, Phyllis assisted her husband in the Eigen Brothers Meat and Locker Plant.
She was an active member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and a member of the Christian Mother’s Society. Babe had a generous spirit and everyone felt welcome in her home. She enjoyed her family and friends and will be missed.
She is survived by children, JoAnne (Tom) Augustin of Detroit Lakes, Garland (Patsy) Eigen of Hutchinson, Judy (Ray) Pelesko of Somerset, NJ, and Greg (Deb) Eigen of Alexandria; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delores Hummel of Illinois; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray, in 1999; and brother, Garland, in infancy.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in Comfrey with Father Mark Mallak officiating.
