Born in Vesta, Minnesota on November 5, 1914, as a young woman, Adeline obtained her teaching certificate from a Minnesota Normal School. Many years later as an adult, she earned a BA from the University of Missouri – Kansas City and an MA in Education from Seattle Pacific University.

Adeline taught third grade in Fontana, CA in the 1950s and served as a substitute teacher in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Kansas City, Kansas in the 1960s. She also taught eighth grade at Kirkland Junior High from the mid-1960s to 1980, where she was a reading specialist, and served as the coordinator of the English curriculum. Adeline provided major assistance to her daughter for the development of the Irlen Center Northwest, offering assessment and treatment of learning problems.

Adeline worked beside her husband, the Rev. L. Floyd Lewis, in support of his ministry in the Lutheran Church, which took them to Minnesota, Utah, California, Alberta, Kansas and Washington. Adeline was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Bellevue, Washington for the past 50 years.

Adeline was a charter member of the Bellevue branch of Self-Help for the Hard of Hearing (SHHH), and helped in its establishment and early development.

Adeline was the vice-president of her high school class, and enthusiastically planned, organized and attended class reunions for 77 years.

Adeline is survived by her two sisters, Yvonne Peters of Mill Valley, CA and Mavis Boyle (Don) of Phoenix, Arizona; her three children, Bonnie McClees of Issaquah, WA, Kirstie Lewis (Peter Sugarman) of Bellevue, WA, and L. Floyd Lewis (Kathryn Schetzer) of Bellingham, WA., her two grandchildren, Johanna Phillips (Eben) of Mill Creek, WA, and Jason Sugarman of Bellevue, WA; and her two great-grandchildren, Edison and Charlotte Phillips. She is also survived by her in-laws, Evelyn Larson of Alexandria, Avis Larson of Parkers Prairie, Leonard Velander of Alexandria; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 22 at Sunset Hills Funeral Home. 1215 145th PL SE, Bellevue, Washington.

Memorials are preferred as donations in Adeline’s name to: The ELCA Foundation, 8765 Higgins Rd, Chicago IL 60631.
