Gustav Kortsch was my great grandfather and I'm very proud of his contributions to the development of Alexandria and the area. I even lived in the Kortsch house when I was very young. Then moved next door into my grandtather's house (Julian Fitzgerald) who had the drug store in Alex and was mayor two different times plus other organizations for community involvement. Julie Snider forwarded the article to me. We still visit Alex every summer as we vacation there plus play in the Resorter's tournament. As you can imagine, I'm very proud of my great grandfather and grand father's service to Alexandria. Thank you printing the article. Jim Fitzgerald, Houston, Texas

I was born and raised in Kensington, my family has resided there for many generations. Almost anyone that had ancestors from the area will tell you, it's real. It's a small community and everyone knows everyone. The day the runestone was pulled from the roots of the tree, many men witnessed. Our great-grandfathers told our grandfathers and so on, that the runestone was so entangled in th roots, that it could not have been planted. It's real people.

These were the movers and shakers of early Alexandria. They were involved in just about everything. At that time, the perception was that if you were a businessman, to succeed in business you had to belong to as many of the fraternal societies that you could join. They were the only networking of their day - now all those same businessmen would have a website, blog, Facebook and Twitter.
