The article cites some information from my comment. Referring to the long lines at KMart, as I recall, all the registers were open. It was just that they couldn't keep up with the numbers of people.

Don't know which Wal-Mart you were at, but the one here in town did have all the registers going. Did you even go there? I was through the line in less than 10 minutes. Did you go over to Target? Those lines stretched all the way back to the shoe department. Not sure why everyone thinks they need to knock Wal-Mart. Have you ever taken the time to look and see all the good things that the local Wal-Mart has done for Alexandria and surrounding towns? It is time to get over it . Wal-Mart has been here in town for 17 years, and in that time I have seen many businesses come to town. How many closed because of Wal-Mart and only Wal-Mart? I for one would like to thank all of the hard working associates and managers at Wal-Mart for making this Black Friday as smooth as all the other ones in the past. Keep up the great work!

Has Wal-Mart ever had all 20+ registers in use? I'd say they're waiting until more businesses shut down around the area, so they can grab some unemployed folks and put them to work, consolidating more and more of the retail dollar.

It could be that some stores have fewer employees due to the down economy, so they don't use all the registers.

I agree with the last line of Black Friday Hits and Misses. I don't see the point in a store having 20+ checkout lanes and rarely having more than four or five open.
