"Vegetarian" is based on the Latin word "vegetus", meaning "whole", "sound", "fresh" and "lively" NOT based on "vegetable" as many people think. Dennis, I imagine many folks feel just like you do. Don't be so hard on yourself. Take it slow. Be a vegetarian one day a week and then maybe two... Perception change with time and when the time is right. I was 12 when I made the decision and 16 when I actually went vegetarian much to my parents dismay. After about 20 years I gave up all animal products i.e. vegan. For me it didn't take discipline to forego the dead animal on my plate, but compassion - being "sympathetic to the suffering or distress of others and the desire to help alleviate or eliminate that suffering". Imagine your reaction to the concept of eating dogs - not that appetizing. The belief system that enables us to eat some animals and not others is explored in the book WHY WE LOVE DOGS EAT PIGS AND WEAR COWS by Melanie Joy.

The word "Vegetarian" is commonly thought of as a derivative of the word "vegetable". Not true: It is actually derived from a Mohawk Indian term meaning "lousy hunter"!

Eating dead animals probably isn't as bad as eating live ones.
