Just to play devil's advocate....let's outlaw car radios while we are at it. How many accidents are caused by inattentive driving, while someone is messing with the radio dials??? Oh, and tell me once again why motorcyclists aren't required to wear helmets?

It is ok to protect people from themselves? That is a slippery slope. Why is cigerette smoking still allowed? Why is drinking still allowed? Why is fast food still allowed? Why is candy still allowed?

Ticket $25, administrative fees $85? Must be government efficiency.

I started wearing my seatbelt back in the 1980s when the fine was only $10.00. I had a boss who said, I wear mine because I'm too cheap to give the cops my $10.00, and I agreed with her and have worn my belt ever since. Now I feel naked if I don't have my seat belt on.

I am not a promoter of seatbelts. I will tell you about something that will be the best assuramce of ( ALL DRIVERS) wearing a seat belt. Simply put, The auto mfgs. need to run a circuit thru the seat belt on drivers seat. It only completes the circuit when the belt is buckled. The motor will not start when unbuckled. What more could be simlpler, BUT ... BET THE CAR MFGS. WOULD NOT ALLOW THIS.

Maybe it'd be an idea to fit all vehicles with a device that jams cell phone signals whenever the engine is running? Wouldn't have to have very much power, and the cost of something like that wouldn't amount to much. Put it on the same circuit as that bell that reminds you to put on the seatbelt, and no one would be able to defeat the thing!

I must have missed that part in the Bible where God says it's our right if we want to wear a seat belt or not.

I don't think dropping the drinking age to 18 is a good idea, but I think raising the age to join the armed forces to 21 might be. Too many kids at 18 think it's all about uniform and glory. Amazing what three years can do.

Woops - thanks B.A.C for reminding me about the mis-spelling. I tend to type so fast I dont notice sometimes. LOL I do believe that the government is getting FAR too involved in any decision making we are able to currently do. There are things that make sence and things that dont. Even though the seatbelt laws are in place I still dont see many enforcing it. and I certainly do not see people enforcing anything to do with texting or talking on a cell phone and driving. Very sad. That should have been passed years ago. I see soccer moms, moms with kids in the car, bus drivers ect talking on phones while driving. They have to be the #1 accident cause in the world.

Back to the subject of the thread ... As it is now, it is the law to wear a seatbelt. Driving a motor vehicle on the roadway is a privilege, not a right. When you get your license you are agreeing to abide by the laws of the road or be cited for not following the law. If you feel the law is unjust, there are avenues (no pun intended) to explore to change it. On a side note, but in response to a post, I also think using a cell phone while driving should be illegal. Texting is, but I still see it happening ... I just did this morning by a soccer mom (said it on her SUV window) on a busy road.
