LLL........I know of several sweetcorn stands that pick fresh daily. I know the kids who run those stands, they are working for their own college funds. Rather admirable IMO. Do you have any idea how much it costs to raise a successful/great tasting corn crop now? The stand in the driveway near Garfleld has always had reasonable prices..........not even close to $6.50. Plus, you can go right into the field and select your own if you really want to. That corn is the best I have ever tasted. Also, the home grown chickens we have purchased are always much larger and taste far better than the ones from the grocery store.

A person has to decide exactly what they expect from "locally grown" at a farmers market. This summer I went to the local Farmer's Market for tomatoes and the only ones being sold were hot house tomatoes. The fact that they were produced in Minnesota does not prompt me to pay twice the store price for hothouse tomatoes and I can't see how they were any better for anybody nutritionally. We need to know that something is really better than store purchased before spending ridiculous prices for local products. A hot house tomato is a hot house tomato whether it comes from Minnesota or halfway across the country. Just add a couple more hours in transit.

Oh, you stopped at one of those fancy yellow stands, too? Now you know how they can afford to have those things, the trucks to haul them around in, and that fancy antique truck. This year there was even one on the west side of Osakis for a while. Think they got bored with people gasping and running away?

If good nutrition is dependent upon buying locally then we have a big problem in this area. The prices at the local Farmer's Market are a total joke. $2.50 for a dozen eggs? Get real! $6.50 per dozen for sweetcorn, $1 per tomato. Just looking to suck in a tourist? I buy my tomatoes from a lady that charges me 50 cents per pound from her home. Bought 100 pounds from her. Wouldn't give anybody $1 for a tomato when they are 99 cents per pound in the grocery store. Who really believes any of this food is grown any differently than by the big commercial growers? Home grown chickens, yup, I sucked into that for awhile and then found out they were penned up being fed the same commercial feeds that the store chickens were fed. You better know what you are buying and take time to find out where it was before it got to you. That sweetcorn that was grown and frozen in California might be fresher than the stuff that sat on some stand for a week at the end of somebody's driveway. What I really enjoyed last year was the squash that was picked so early that it wasn't even yellow inside yet. Garbage that cost a fortune! Buy locally if you can find sources that are dependable, reasonable and have a quality product, otherwise go to the local grocery store for your food.
