Come to think of it, I used to love the coneys at the local A&W. Turned out they were more of a chiledog. Got out to the west coast, and a 'coney' turned out to be something completely different.

Wonder if it's a regional thing? Like "casserole" vs "hotdish"?

Sloppy joe, not barbeque. Why on earth would you call something a barbeque when you fry ground beef and put ketchup and seasonings in it ? Yuck! Real barbeque is an art that takes years to master, and hours of slow smoking in a smoker built for making BARBEQUE! Not some greasey slop that takes ten minutes to make.

"Creamed peas". That brings back some unpleasant memories. One lunch we had was, baked (blackened) salmon loaf, creamed peas, canned plums in a Dixie cup, and the usual square white bread sandwiches. Nice color combination. And don't forget those little half pint bottles or cartons of milk, sometimes sour.

In the days of yore, when the buildings, trees, your childhood home was larger there was a 'fantastic Bar-b-que sandwich" served at the Fountain of Youth...aka: the Fountain. It was fantastic, much more exotic that the Maid-Rite-on the corner- with mininal spicy seasoning and only a hamburger pickle, centrally placed for titilation. Why was it so great? well lets see; the ladies in the Hot Lunch cafeteria at Central High School (and elementary AND junior high) were offering Salmon Croquettes covered with white-green pea enhansed-gravy and green pea, cheese, and mayo salad, plus white bread and whole white milk. Kids with coins in hand could make educated decisions...hot lunch? or...or...run to the Fountain for Mr. Connie's BBQs, a coke and chips. The schools cared about your balanced nutrition, Connie cared if you had 22 cents for the BBQ. And if you didn't...bring it tomorrow. Try that system today. The recipe: WE can do it!! Hamburger meat (now ground beef) tomato sauce, ketchup, chopped onion, chopped celery, MSG, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, salt, pepper....enough ketchup? Considering most kids did not get to "the cities" and mom just made casseroles...this was fantastic. ( facts obtained from much older persons.)

Little insommnia there Roger, E? Anyway, yes the vet. service organizations do have entry criteria to actually include military service. I had been hounded by my Korean War neighbor to join the VFW where he was in his third year as Commander. We went to an "orientation" get together and 15 minutes into it...found myself meeting the criteria and taking the oath. This post is different...no smoking, no bar, no gambling, no punch boards...and while we endur the war stories of those about croak (the majority)and have a home cooked meal once a month, the unit has only two goals: The presentation of colors at a dozen civic events and equally meaningful, the person-to-person reorientation of Iraq-Afganistan veterans wishing to attend George Mason University or other nearby colleges. Those with a little time on their retired hands pair with a veteran to get through the red tape of tuition assistance. Would non-veterans have the same understanding and desire? Who knows? The Elks went gender neutral several years ago and I, a nice Norwegian boy, quallify for membership in the NAACP. Sometimes it's simply financial survival. Personally i'd prefer to share war stories...rather than just a beer.

Reference the veterans service clubs: These organizations are chartered by the federal government, which as I understand, specifies membership criteria. I have received invitations to join the VFW and service dates and criteria are included in the application.

Yeah, ryan, after I thought about it, I wonder what would happen if some little kid got hold of that turtle? That wasn't mentioned in the article at all. Or, if that turtle got hold of some little kid? As far as the ducks and geese go, I guess the city could hire someone to diaper all of them. It's getting to the time of year when all the city parks start to get absolutely GROSS. HOW many truckloads did they claim they hauled out of Noonan's a few years ago?

i agree with u there b.a.c i bet that snapping turtle was put there as a cheep and natural way to reduce the duck population (i guess that would be a more humane way to take care of them than i would have done lol)

DRIFTING! The lane markers and Left turn lanes marked on South Broadway are a help both from drifting and not blocking traffic when turning off S. BDWY. Thank the Alexandria Street Department.
