I remember that I was a participant in the Centennial Parade. I sat on top of a fake horse and was dressed as a Native American. Still have the picture.

Although Nicholas may be a little "over the top," I can't help wonder how many disagreements might have been avoided by the simple use of a comma or period. Just a thought. Nothing earth shattering.

One does not have to "find" "Eats, Shoots and Leaves", Nicholas, by searching. It is quite ubiquitous. Even on my shelf, $12.95 @ Costco- 2006. What I find personally grinding, is the written word, as in the final line of your 10:47 posting in which you say "...will become quite annoying and irresistible to point out to those who do not know any better." I find it much more difficult to write as we speak and use the alternate contraction "don't" instead your "do not". I can't wait to get a hot dog an'beer in Holmes City. En dash, not a hyphen?...What a crock.

It is not my position, or any one elses, to correct anyone unless it is in a classroom situation. It is ignorant and rude to focus on someone's mistakes when they are trying to do something as up close and personal as talk to you or write you a letter. Only someone with low self esteem would find that enjoyable and irresistible.

I guess we have to rip out 99% of the cemetary headstones in the county. Maybe the state. MAYBE THE WORLD.

In the spirit of these online discussions, the reason we have expensive gas, inadequate health care, war, and excessive unemployment is that people are too lazy and sloppy to learn to do things correctly in the first place. I leave it as an exercise to the reader to think about why this may be a reason, albeit a very generalized and snide one at that. But if we are to "get real," why don't we simply quit using punctuation? While we're at it, we'll throw out grammar, too. Then we can try to communicate with each other in a civilized and effective manner—without all of those funny dots and squiggles and fussy choices of words—to solve the problems of our time. I'm sure that would work really well. Anyway, I would like to point out to CJ S that no, it is not the water here. I would have noticed such a typographical error when I was in high school at Jefferson. When I was at the Douglas County Library last summer, I found a book by Lynne Truss entitled _Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation._ I would highly recommend this book, but be forewarned that little things in life, e.g. the use of hyphens instead of en dashes, will become quite annoying and irresistible to point out to those who do not know any better.

This is not the first time concern about the en dash has been expressed. Gas is $4.00 a gallon, half of America is without health care, we're at war, unemployment is soaring. Get real.
