Stacie Kimball has been a staff writer at the Echo Press since August 2011. She graduated from the administrative assistant program at Alexandria Technical College. She worked at the college before staying at home to raise her children and run her own business for nine years. She lives in Douglas County with her husband, Jim, and children, Cole and Eva. In her spare time, she enjoys family time, photography, animals, fishing and snowmobiling.

All I want for Christmas

Abby Koopman of Alexandria wanted a Barbie for Christmas, but more than that, she wanted her dad home for the holidays. Abby’s dad, Joe Koopman, is a sergeant in the National Guard stationed in Kuwait.

Realize a talent and believe

It is amazing what people can do when they realize their own talents. After years of doubt in her abilities, Tracy Anderson of Alexandria realized her talent and pursued it. Anderson’s uncle is an artist and retired art professor. She remembered, as an enthused young girl, watching him draw and asking, “Can you draw me a horse?”

The Small Mall provided gifts for children to purchase

The Small Mall event was developed last year by Pastor Mick Murphy from Calvary Covenant Church in Evansville and Sara Evanson, youth pastor for the Evansville churches. It was designed to teach children the importance of giving to others.

Is it a black/white thing?

Black dogs and black cats are often the last to find homes and the first in line to be euthanized. Even pet stores shy away from taking in black pets.

Wondering what tasty concoction might be a hit at your holiday party? Students at Alexandria Technical and Community College (ATCC) hosted an event that searched for the perfect non-alcoholic drink to help out with that. The DECA organization at ATCC held its first-ever “Hangover Free Happy Hour” event on Wednesday, December 7.

In the pursuit of peace

“I want to feel that at some point I was able to start a ripple effect,” said BrieAnn West. The ambitious young woman exudes maturity beyond her years and has a passport that would rival that of any jetsetter’s. But her many international trips weren’t taken for pleasure. They were taken in the hopes of getting the ripple effect started, leading to the ultimate goal of world peace.

An eco-friendly high school

The new District 206 high school in Alexandria will be energy efficient due to a decision made at the most recent school board meeting. At the meeting held on Monday, November 21, the District 206 School Board voted unanimously to pursue LEED certification for the high school project. The school would be the first one in Alexandria to receive this certification.

Making beautiful music in a noisy world

Many things in Kaczrowski’s life became easier to understand after his diagnosis. The noise sensitivity, the overload he would feel after interacting with people and the way he thrived on repetition and routine became clear. He explained how doing things the exact same way, every day, “freed his mind.” Thinking is processing, which is difficult for someone with Asperger’s.
