The Osakis boys’ basketball team ran into a big Eden Valley-Watkins team in the season opener as the Silverstreaks fell 66-36 in the first game of head coach Matt Hoelscher’s career.
Osakis had a hard time containing Eden Valley’s Bret Mattice, who finished with 19 points. Brent Stenger added 13, while Jared Streit chipped in 10 to help his team pull away. The Eagles led Osakis 40-19 at the half and didn’t let up after the break, holding the Silverstreaks to just 17 points.
“Bottom line from our game is that we were outsized,” Hoelscher said. “They had two tall guys that caused us trouble on the offensive and defensive glass. We gave up too many second chance points.”
Osakis couldn’t afford that with the way things went on offense. The Silverstreaks shot 32 percent from the field and went 2-of-9 from the three-point line.
Senior Kilar Zimmel was the only player to shoot better than 50 percent as he finished 7-of-11 for 17 points. He added nine rebounds, four steals and one assist. Doug Zimmel was the Silverstreaks’ second leading scorer with nine points.
“Offensively, we had some really good looks,” Hoelscher said. “The ball just wasn’t falling in the hoop. I was very pleased with the looks we got on offense, our hustle on defense and our overall attitude and effort throughout the game. The guys never gave up, and if we keep that mentality throughout the year, we will win some games.”
The next chance for Osakis to do that will come tomorrow, Thursday, in a Prairie Conference game against Swanville. It’s the second of four straight road games to open the season for the Silverstreaks. They will be at Ashby on December 11 and Royalton two days later before opening their home schedule against Long Prairie-Grey Eagle on December 18.
