Girls' basketball: Free throws again thwart Minnewaska

For the second game in a row, the Laker girls came up one point short.

Last Tuesday, Minnewaska dropped its season opener to Paynesville 48-47 on a late free throw, and on Thursday, fell to Melrose 50-49 as the Dutchmen hit five free throws in overtime to win.

In both games, the Lakers had the last shot opportunities, and were unable to convert.

The Lakers held a one-point halftime lead, but foul trouble plagued the team. Minnewaska committed 23 fouls, allowing Melrose to stay in the game as they hit 18 of their 30 attempts on the night.

Madi Phillips led both teams with 18 points, including four 3-pointers, while Sydney Joos added 16 points.

Melrose got 17 points from Tayler Reller.

The Lakers outshot and outrebounded the Dutchmen, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the charity points.

Joos and Paige Anderson had nine and eight rebounds, respectively, while Phillips led the Lakers with five assists.
