Boys' basketball: Brandon-Evansville opens with overtime loss
Haseman, Satterlie both hit double figures
The Brandon-Evansville boys’ basketball team had plenty of chances to win its season opener before falling 58-52 in two overtimes against Wheaton-Herman-Norcross last Friday night.
The Chargers forced those two extra sessions despite shooting 13-of-30 from the free throw line and getting outrebounded 49-37. Ultimately, that proved to be the difference in the game as the Warriors outscored Brandon-Evansville 8-2 in the second overtime to secure the win.
“We had our chances,” head coach John Holsten said. “We just didn’t make free throws and didn’t get defensive rebounds. We just needed one more of something. One more free throw, one more defensive rebound. Every possession mattered in that game, and give Wheaton credit, they played better than us.”
Neither team shot the ball well from the field on a night where 50 fouls were called between the two teams. Wheaton shot 19-of-66 from the field and hit 19-of-32 free throws, while the Chargers shot 18-of-48 from the field.
John Haseman came out of the gates with a strong game in the post. He finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Fellow senior Blake Satterlie also had a nice night with 14 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the three-point line.
“He shot the ball well,” Holsten said of Satterlie. “He played most of the game but had to sit down for a while after hurting his knee. He came back in and showed some courage with that. He was really outstanding.”
The Chargers will try to bounce back with two games on the schedule this week. They welcomed in Swanville last night, Tuesday, before going on the road to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa this Friday. The Jaguars are 2-0 and scored 92 points against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Saturday after winning a Class A state championship last winter.
