Boys' basketball: West Central Area splits at BBE tournament

The Knights fell to the defending state champs before defeating KMS

The West Central Area boys’ basketball team bounced back from a 65-38 loss to the defending state champions by taking a 93-19 game over Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Tipoff Classic tournament this past weekend.

The Knights got 25 points, six rebounds and five steals from Dakotah Kashmark in the win over KMS. Drew Peterson flirted with a quadruple-double after finishing with 24 points, 12 steals, six rebounds and six assists. Jay Zimmerman and Brady Combs were also in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

That came after the Knights had fallen victim to another good BBE team the night before. The Jaguars are fresh off a Class A state title and are off to a 2-0 start to their season after winning their opening tournament.

West Central Area was able to stay close in the first half. The Knights trailed by just six at the break but were outscored 38-17 after halftime.

“I thought our defense was very solid in the first half,” head coach Kraig Hunter said. “We kept them off balance and forced them to turn the ball over some. We hit a three pointer that would have made the game 25-22 at one point but got called for traveling and the bucket was no good. In the second half, I thought we were very weak with the ball and turned it over too many times to have any efficiency on offense.”

Kashmark led the Knights with 12 points. Combs and Austin Redepenning each added nine.

The Knights will be at home against Eagle Valley tomorrow night, Thursday, in their only game of the week.
