Girls' basketball: Brandon-Evansville can't stop Hancock
The Brandon-Evansville girls’ basketball team stuck with Hancock through one half last Thursday before the Owls’ size began to wear the Chargers down in a 71-53 game.
Senior center Courtney Greiner led all scorers with 24 points. She wasn’t alone for the Owls as Sami Schmidgall poured in 15 and Gabbi Nienhaus finished with 17, most of which came on offensive putbacks around the basket.
“I think it was the inside game against Greiner that hurt us,” Chargers head coach Dick Simpson said. “She’s pretty good. We just had too many turnovers, defensive lapses and poor defensive rebounding.”
The Chargers couldn’t keep up on a night where they shot 30 percent (18-of-60) compared to 50 percent (31-of-62) for the Owls. Megan Kokett led Brandon-Evansville with 14 points and three steals. Megan Friedrich had 10 points and six rebounds, while Emily Friedrich poured in 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The loss dropped the Chargers to 0-2 on the young season before embarking on another difficult portion of the schedule this week. Brandon-Evansville traveled to Parkers Prairie (2-0) last night, Tuesday, before welcoming in Underwood this Friday.
