Alexandria wrestling: Piepenburg takes Litchfield title

The Cardinals’ Trent Piepenburg, ranked No. 4 in the State Class AAA polls, led his Alexandria wrestling squad to a third place finish at the Litchfield Invitational Saturday, finishing first at 120 pounds.
“The Cardinal wrestlers opened the 2012 season with a fast start at the Litchfield tournament [last] weekend,” said head coach Tom Ellison. “Wrestling without three starters in the lineup, the Cards were able to finish in fifth place, with state-ranked ACGC winning the tournament.
“The Cardinals started strong by putting together seven straight opening round wins.
“Ben Bogart started the streak with a win at 106 pounds,” he said. “That win was followed by Dylan Kriese, Piepenburg, Blake Olhausen, Tryg Burgau, Tristan Johnson and Tony Hubbard all picking up first round wins.
“Trent went on to win his 120 pound weight bracket. Blake and Tony finished in second place, while Ben finished in third place.
“Tristan Johnson and Andrew Moske placed fifth and Tryg, Dylan and Shawn Nelson finished sixth.”
Alexandria will host its first match tomorrow night, Thursday, as Brainerd will be at Jefferson High School.
