Alexandria kicked up its heels Saturday, capturing top honors at the Detroit Lakes Invitational.
“The Cards had an outstanding performance in kick and took first place,” said head coach Christine Reilly. “Five teams made up the Class AA kick competition and the Cardinals had a clear lead, despite still being short a couple of dancers due to illness and injury.
“After a disappointing finish last Tuesday at the CLC kick meet, the team knew they could do much better and the girls were determined to prove themselves.
“The captains – Madison Groettum, Emily Haan and Alexis Kokett – showed great leadership by not letting the team get down about a less than satisfactory performance on Tuesday,” she added. “Instead, they kept the team loose but focused on getting the job done.”
Alexandria was first in the order of competition, setting the bar high for the remainder of the teams.
“There are five categories on the kick score sheet, and the Cardinals led in three out of the five,” said Reilly, “especially in the execution category.”
Alexandria was first with four points, while Detroit Lakes was second with 5.5, Fergus Falls third at 9.5, Becker fourth with 11 and Crookston fifth with 15.
Alexandria will be at the Albany Invitational on Saturday.
