Girls' basketball: Osakis rolls to opening win

A close first half evolved into a runaway victory for the Osakis girls as they won their season opener over Brandon-Evansville 61-34 Tuesday night.
“It was nice to start the season out with a solid win,” said Silverstreak head coach Pat Kalpin. “Both teams were a little sluggish early in the game, with really no flow. That’s to be expected in an early season game.”
The first half had a few momentum swings, but stayed within a few points until a late surge by Osakis gave them a 33-22 halftime lead.
“We were competitive for about a half,” said Charger head coach Dick Simpson. “We didn’t shoot well and Osakis is pretty good.”
In that first half, Megan Friedrich kept the Chargers in the game, scoring eight of her 10 points on the night, and helping to counter the 13 first half points by Osakis’ Annalise Savageau, who finished the night with 19.
“As the game went on, I felt that our pressure wore them down,” said Kalpin. “Defensively, we were called for too many fouls, especially early. Basically, it comes down to being out of position at times or not being ready to move our feet.”
The Silverstreaks had 16 fouls and 12 turnovers on the night, while the Chargers committed 13 fouls and turned the ball over 21 times.
“A lot of them were in the half-court,” Simpson said of his team’s 21 turnovers. “Their pressure defense – they were up in our face – and we had some bad passes, not reacting right and throwing it when we shouldn’t have.”
The Silverstreaks finished the night on a 28-12 run over the final 18 minutes.
“The second half was a different story,” Kalpin added. “I felt we played more relaxed, but hard. We stayed in better position defensively and offensively took care of the ball and took good shots.
“It was fun to see the girls compete with many contributing. We had 11 girls score, and it was nice to see the balance. We are happy with the win, but realize that we have many areas of the game that we need to get better at.”
Osakis is now 1-0, while the Chargers are 0-1.
“Our girls played hard, but we had some turnovers, especially in the second half, that hurt us,” said Simpson. “Osakis played pretty well, so we’ll go on from there.”
Brandon-Evansville was at Hancock last night, Thursday, and will be at Parkers Prairie Tuesday night.
The Silverstreaks hosted Morris last night, Thursday, and will host Swanville Tuesday night.
