Cobber wrestlers
Alexandria graduate Tom Bouressa is among the top wrestlers for the Concordia Cobber wrestling team.
Bouressa, a 6’3”, 285-pound senior heavyweight, has won all three of his matches so far this season, taking first at 285 pounds at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open, defeating two NCAA Division I wrestlers along the way, as well as teammate Cody Kasprick in a 2-1 overtime match.

Whiting All-MIAC
Alexandria graduate Mark Whiting, junior wide receiver for Concordia, and Tom Quist, senior outside linebacker, were named to the All-MIAC second team offense after their Cobber team finished with an 8-2 overall record and was ranked 22nd in the American Football Coaches Association DIII polls.
Matt Peterson, junior running back, of Alexandria is also a part of the team, as is Parker Giroux, sophomore running back, and Ross Thompson, junior safety.
Chris Ludwig of Osakis is a junior linebacker on the squad.
Cardinal, Panther girls ranked in pre-season
The Cardinal girls’ basketball team is ranked No. 10 in the State Class AAA pre-season polls released recently, while Parkers Prairie is ranked No. 10 in Class A.
Area wrestlers ranked
Several Alexandria and area wrestlers were among those in the pre-season state rankings released recently.
The Cardinals have a pair of state-ranked wrestlers with Trent Piepenburg No. 4 at 113 pounds in the State Class AAA polls and Justin Cumberbatch No. 5 at 220 pounds.
Three Osakis wrestlers are ranked in Class A with Brendon Coyer No. 2 at 106 pounds, Trenton Coyer No. 8 at 113 pounds and Garret Scherr No. 3 at 220 pounds.
From Parkers Prairie, Tyler Schlosser is the top-ranked Class A wrestler at 220 pounds, while Minnewaska’s Ryan Stottler is ranked No. 6 at 160 pounds.
Polar Plunge

Registration is now open for the 2013 Alexandria Polar Bear Plunge, presented by Minnesota law enforcement to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota.
The funds raised benefit more than 7,100 Special Olympics Minnesota athletes.
The Alexandria Plunge will be held at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria.
The Plunge begins at 1 p.m. on February 24. Check-in will be at the Plunge site.

Elks Hoop Shoot
The annual Elks Hoop Shoot will be held on Thursday, December 27 at 2 p.m. in the Jefferson High School gymnasium.
The competition is open to boys and girls ages 8-13 as of April 1, 2013.
Winners in the competition advance through local, district, state and regional competitions to the national event.
LAR 35-older open gym
Lakes Area Recreation holds open gym on Sundays for 35-older from 7-9 p.m. at the Discovery Middle School gym, running to the middle of April.
Cost is $3 for adults.

Tiny Dribblers basketball program at LAR
Lakes Area Recreation will hold the Tiny Dribblers program for boys and girls in kindergarten as an introduction to the game of basketball.
The program will meet seven times at the Lincoln Elementary gym on Saturdays beginning on January 5 and running through February 16. Boys will meet from 9-9:45 a.m. and the girls will meet from 10-10:45 a.m.
Cost is $32 and includes a T-shirt.

Sportsmen’s swap meet
The United Way/Elks Lodge Sportsmen’s Swap Meet will be Saturday, December 1 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Alexandria Elks Lodge.
Cost of the table rental is $10. Bring unwanted golf, fishing, hunting and camping equipment to sell or swap.
Proceeds from the table rental and lunch will go to the United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties.

Montevideo youth
basketball tournament
There will be a youth basketball tournament in Montevideo for boys and girls in grades 5-7 on Saturday, March 23.
Entry deadline is March 8.

Team Extreme Ice
Fishing tournaments
Lake Osakis will be the first stop of the Team Extreme Ice Fishing tournament on December 30. Action will continue on Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood on January 27, followed by Pelican Lake in Monticello on February 27, Clearwater Lake in St. Cloud on March 3, Round Lake in Brainerd on March 31 and Mille Lacs Lake in Garrison on April 7.
This is a team event with two anglers per team, with eight crappies and eight sunfish allowed to be weighed in. In the Mille Lacs Lake event, the limit will be 15 perch.
Action will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is a limit of 75 teams.

Frozen Ole Pond Hockey
The Frozen Ole Pond Hockey championships are set for January 11-13 in the Viking Plaza Mall parking lot next to D. Michael B’s.
There will be seven divisions, 336 skaters, 4,000 square feet of ice and three rinks where 105 games of hockey will be played.
Along with the hockey action, there will be live music on Friday and Saturday nights and craft beer sampling, along with other vendors.
