Oratorical contest to be held

The Alexandria 2012 High School Oratorical Contest will be held this month. The Department (State) American Legion will award scholarships to the winner, runner-up, third and fourth place at the Department level.

The Alexandria 2012 High School Oratorical Contest will be held this month.

The Department (State) American Legion will award scholarships to the winner, runner-up, third and fourth place at the Department level. These scholarships are $1,500, $1,000, $700 and $500, respectively.

Additionally, the winner will compete at the national level where three primary scholarships will be awarded: 1st – $18,000, 2nd – $16,000 and 3rd – $14,000. Each student that competes at the national level will also receive a $1,500 scholarship.

The prepared oration must be on an aspect of the U.S Constitution with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. An assigned topic will be chosen by a contest official from the following: Article II, § 1, paragraph 5; Amendment 22, first sentence; Amendment 2 and Amendment 24.

To be eligible, students must be a U.S. citizen, bona fide student, younger than age 20 on April 21, 2013, and enrolled in Jefferson High School, Osakis High School or be a freshman at Discovery Middle School.

The winner of Alexandria’s contest will compete at the district level and the winner there at the department level.
