Alexandria girls' hockey: A solid second for the Cards

Despite competing without a full contingent of players for most of the second period, those Cards who were on the ice weren’t deterred and blasted four shots past Detroit Lakes goalkeeper Veronica Badurek as Alexandria picked up its second straight victory with a 6-0 shutout Thursday night.

“[This was a] great game against DL,” said Cardinal head coach Andy Shriver. “[It was a] good step to avenging February’s playoff loss.

“There were lots of penalties. I was pleased with how girls killed off penalties and kept composure.”

Alexandria picked up its first and only goal of the first period as Melissa Drown put the Cards on the board. It was her first goal of the year and came on an assist from Taylor Ellingson.

Penalties left the Cardinals shorthanded through most of the second period, but Alexandria peppered the net, connecting on four shots.

“Things were fun with Shelby Iverson and Becca Illies getting their customary goals, Melissa Drown getting her first of the year, ninth grader Mari Wosepka lighting the lamp for the first time as a varsity player and Nicole Bartels popping in two goals within 15 seconds of each other,” said Shriver.

Iverson’s goal came on an assist from Drown, with Illies’ coming on a shorthanded play.

Bartels scored her first goal on a rebound of Wosepka’s attempt, and the second came unassisted just before time ran out in the second.

The Cards finished the scoring with a goal in the third as Wosepka was assisted by Lauren Niska and Kaila Dewanz.

It was the second consecutive shutout for goalie Amy Jost, who picked up the first of the season on Tuesday night in a 3-0 win over Fergus Falls.

“Amy turned back all 19 of the Lakers’ shots, anchoring a solid defensive performance,” said Shriver of the freshman goalie. “It was Amy’s second shutout in as many games, both [against] section teams.”

Jost made 19 saves in the victory over the Lakers as the Cards outshot Detroit Lakes 47-19.

“The defense was stalwart,” he added. “Shaneé Herd, who has been one of the best players on the ice for the past two years, and Anna Carlsen, as senior defenders, led a young corps – sophomore Nicole Bartels, 9th grader Lauren Niska and 8th grader McKenzie Revering.

“Bartels was called upon to move from defense to forward in the second period and responded by scoring two goals 15 seconds apart.

Alexandria was to have hosted Moorhead last night, Tuesday, and will be at Mound-Westonka on Friday and Orono on Saturday.
