Two shootouts ended on the opposite side of the win/loss column this past weekend as the Alexandria Blizzard split its two games to move to 7-5-0-1 on the season.
Alexandria took care of the Minnesota Aces 4-3 on Saturday. That was one night after the Blizzard fell in a 3-2 game that was decided in a shootout against defending league champion Granite City.
Tanner Duffney scored what turned out to be the game winner against the Stars. He broke a 1-1 tie after each team’s first two shooters in the shootout. Ian Ecklund scored Alexandria’s first goal in that session.
Kyle Miller made both of those goals stand up in net for the Blizzard. He turned aside Minnesota’s final three shots from Chase Myers-Beck, Jared Sprink and Alex Yde to secure the win. Miller got the win after picking up 22 saves through regulation and overtime.
Duffney was able to book-end the scoring for Alexandria after opening things up in the first period. He answered two straight goals by Minnesota out of the gate to make it 2-1 heading into the second period. Nate Mettenburg and Ecklund added goals for Alexandria in the second period before the two teams went scoreless through the third period and overtime.
The Blizzard had its chances to end a three-game losing streak to Granite City the night before in a close game from start to finish. The Blizzard led 2-1 early in the shootout before the Lumberjacks used goals from Nick Turbitt and Drew Otto to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Neither team was able to create much separation throughout the night. After a scoreless first period, Granite City’s Aidan Verbeke gave his team a 1-0 lead just 50 seconds into the second. Alexandria responded with a few minutes left in the period when Austin Rudnick scored at 16:28 to even things at one apiece.
The Lumberjacks took back the lead 6:43 into the second as DJ Vold connected. Next it was Mick Dhein’s turn to score the equalizer for Alexandria as he found the back of the net off assists from Joe Anderson and Danny Pelzer.
Chase Wilson kept the Blizzard in it with 24 saves on the 26 shots he faced. Granite City’s Scott Murray got the win after turning aside 26 shots on 28 opportunities.
Alexandria will be back at home for two games this weekend. Minnesota will come to the Runestone Community Center on Friday before Breezy Point is in town on Saturday night. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
