Cardinals' Schmidt is State Class AA assistant coach of the yearHe shares the honor with Kris Heimerman of Cretin-Derham Hall
Cardinal girls’ tennis assistant coach John Schmidt, who had previously been named the Section 8AA assistant coach of the year, has received another honor.
Schmidt was one of just two coaches named as State Class AA assistant coaches of the year. Kris Heimerman of Cretin-Derham Hall was the other selection.
Schmidt has been a teacher in Alexandria since 1980 and has coached junior high football, basketball and tennis, one or all, every year that he has taught.
He played football and basketball in high school, as well as basketball in college.
Schmidt has been the assistant tennis coach for five seasons, and learned the game from scratch.
“John has a unique way of giving the kids nicknames that they always seem to enjoy, and it gives coach and player a bond on a whole new level,” said head coach Dave Ronning. “John is very easy to get to know and get along with. He is always quick to lend a helping hand whenever needed.”
The Cardinal girls were the Central Lakes Conference runners-up with a 9-2 record and were 21-3 overall this year.
