Marvin Carlson, 90

Marvin Jens Carlson, 90, died Monday, November 5, 2012 at St. Cloud Hospital.

Marvin was born May 24, 1922 near Bay City, Wisconsin to Hjalmer and Christine (Smith) Carlson. He attended school in Bay City through the ninth grade. Marvin then stayed home to help his Dad farm. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during WWII. He went to trade school to become a bricklayer.

Marvin was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Lindholm on January 21, 1949 at the Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester. He worked for OA Stocke Company, where he supervised the construction of the Mayo Clinic building in Rochester. Marvin was a strict foreman but was very respected and his workers loved to call him “Swede.” He also was the financial secretary for the Southeast Minnesota Bricklayers Union. Marvin retired in 1988. He took up golf and became an avid golfer.

Marvin was also a great fisherman, enjoyed camping on Lake Pepin, being outdoors, dancing, being a friendly visitor, which Marvin and Dorothy did together. He was very family oriented and loved spending time with the grandchildren. He also loved good jokes, chocolate, and making lefsa.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; daughters, Lois (Ed) Davidge of Walker and Deb (Darrell) Moyer of Alexandria; grandchildren, Eric (Julie) Davidge, Christine Davidge, Nathan Moyer and Kelsey Moyer; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Gill, MacKenzie Davidge, Jason Rivers, Avery Davidge, Grace Rivers, Keegan Davidge and David Rivers; and many nieces and nephews.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Hjalmer and Christine; brothers, Harold, Earl, and twin brother, Melvin; and sister, Harriet Holly.

A memorial service was held Friday, November 9 at Grand Arbor with the Rev. Art Montgomery officiating. Music was provided by pianist, Sandy Buckner and soloist, Kim Byrne. Military honors were provided by the Alexandria American Legion Post 87 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 936, and the Minnesota National Honor Guard. Inurnment was at Kinkead Cemetery in Alexandria. Honorary urn bearers were Tom Jansen, Bob Fisher, Jim Engh, Larry Ofstedal, Harold Christensen and Duane Bjorkland.
