Hundreds of pro-life activists gathered in just above freezing temperatures Sunday under gloomy skies on the Douglas County Courthouse lawn to pray to end abortion.
Alexandria Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life held its annual “Walk for Life” to promote alternatives to abortion. The walk followed a 40-day peaceful protest in front of Planned Parenthood in Alexandria. The “40 Days for Life” ended Friday.
The group gathered at Zion Lutheran Church, walked down Broadway Street and 7th Avenue to congregate on the courthouse stairway and grounds where the event culminated in speeches and song. Activists walked behind a “Pray to End Abortion” banner and were accompanied by bagpipe music during the trek.
Nevin Smith and Gerry Hoelscher led the rally, citing Bible scripture. Hoelscher shared his personal prayer for political candidates. Representative Paul Anderson, Alexandria City Council member Owen Miller, Bob Cunniff, Representative Mary Franson and Lee Byberg attended the rally, drawing applause from the crowd.
Douglas County commissioners granted approval to use the courthouse property for the assembly.
