The Minnewaska football team took an early lead but couldn’t hold off top-seeded BOLD as the Warriors punched their ticket to the Class AA state tournament with a 42-21 win in the Section 5AA finals on Friday night.
“I thought that our guys played hard to the finish,” Lakers head coach Steve Hill said. “I’m very proud of them, and I’m sure that the fans, parents and students that were at the game would agree with me. There was no quit in the Lakers.”
Minnewaska’s Austin Ostrander connected with Jake Amundson for a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter that made it 7-0 Lakers. The Warriors responded by scoring 28 unanswered points behind four rushing touchdowns.
That gave BOLD all the momentum it would need to hold on for the win. The Warriors led 21-7 at the half and added three more rushing touchdowns after the break. That was part of a big night on the ground as BOLD ran for 283 yards on 56 carries.
The Lakers went to the air to try and get back in the game. Ostrander and Amundson connected 10 times for 138 yards. Amundson added his second touchdown of the night in the third quarter when he caught an 11-yard pass from Ostrander that made it 28-14.
Ostrander finished the game 14-of-26 for 170 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. His third touchdown pass came in the final frame as he connected with Sam Long for a 12-yard score.
“Jake Amundson had another great night for us,” Hill said. “His 10 receptions is a single game school record. Some of those catches were spectacular. On defense, he had two pass breakups, as well. Austin Ostrander also had a good night. He was accurate, even when pressured. We had two tough interceptions, but that’s what happens sometimes when you are trying to make plays. I don’t fault him for that.”
The Warriors were just a little too much on this night. The Warriors moved to 10-0 with the win. They will take on Holdingford in the opening round of the state tournament this Thursday at 7 p.m.
“BOLD is a very good football team,” Hill said. “They have many good athletes and they are very well coached. They played a very good game; no turnovers and one penalty. There just isn’t much of a margin for error against BOLD. I think they could win it all if they continue to play this well.”
