VanKempen at state

West Central Area freshman Abby VanKempen finished 125th at the State Class A girls’ cross country meet in Northfield Saturday.

VanKempen ran a 16:32.8 over the 4,000-meter course.

The meet was won by Clare Flanigan of The?Blake School with a time of 14:04.1.

Sadlemyer Prairie

athlete of the week

Osakis’ Becka Sadlemyer was selected as the Prairie Conference female athlete of the week in volleyball.

Sadlemyer had 14 kills and 19 blocks in the Silverstreaks’ three matches against Upsalsa, Kimball and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

Piepenburg at Big Ten championships

Alexandria’s Jamie Piepenburg, a freshman at the University of Minnesota, finished 70th at the Big Ten championships with a time of 21:52.5.

The Gophers finished fourth overall with 134 points.

Assistant coaches

of the year

Alexandria’s Nathan Knick and Jackie Bucholz were named section assistant coaches of the year by their respective coaches associations.

Knick was named the 8A boys’ soccer assistant coach of the year and Bucholz was named the 8AAA volleyball assistant coach of the year.

Alpine ski team meeting

The Lakes Area Alpine ski team is holding an organizational meeting Thursday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m. at Andes Tower Hills.

The meeting is for all high school skiers, parents and anyone interested.

LAAST is a high school downhill ski team that includes students from Alexandria, West Central Area, Fergus Falls, Wheaton, Herman-Norcross and Chokio-Alberta.

YMCA Turkey Day 5K walk/run

The Alexandria Area YMCA will hold its second annual Turkey Day 5K walk/run on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22 at the YMCA.

The event is open to members and non-members. Check in and registration begins at 6:30 a.m., with an 8 a.m. race start.

The race begins and ends at the YMCA.

Participants who register before Monday, November 18 are guaranteed a YMCA Turkey Day 5K T-shirt.

Early bird registration is $20 and on the day of the race is $25.

Austin McCulloch, 18, of Alexandria is now attending the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy, a full-time program for grades 5-12 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Team Extreme Ice

Fishing tournaments

Lake Osakis will be the first stop of the Team Extreme Ice Fishing tournament on December 30. Action will continue on Lake Minnewaska in Glenwood on January 27, followed by Pelican Lake in Monticello on February 27, Clearwater Lake in St. Cloud on March 3, Round Lake in Brainerd on March 31 and Mille Lacs Lake in Garrison on April 7.

This is a team event with two anglers per team, with eight crappies and eight sunfish allowed to be weighed in. In the Mille Lacs Lake event, the limit will be 15 perch.

Action will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is a limit of 75 teams.

Frozen Ole Pond Hockey

The Frozen Ole Pond Hockey championships are set for January 11-13 in the Viking Plaza Mall parking lot next to D. Michael B’s.

There will be seven division, 336 skaters, 4,000 square feet of ice and three rinks where 105 games of hockey will played.

Along with the hockey action, there will be live music on Friday and Saturday nights and craft beer sampling, along with other vendors.

Men’s adult basketball league registration

Lakes Area Recreation is taking registrations for the men’s adult basketball league.

League will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Discovery Middle School and Lakes Area Recreation gyms. Play is scheduled to start November 27.

The cost is $415 per team and deadline for registration is November 9.
