To the editor:

Last Sunday, the Diocese of St. Cloud decided to tell its congregations how to vote. That institution is traveling down a dangerous path. They would be wise to study the history of countries like Russia, Greece, Iran and Portugal, which have historically been theocracies. Both the people’s faith and successful governance stumbled and fell along the way.

At St. Ann’s, we were told the same-sex marriage amendment is not discrimination; which, by definition, is “treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs...” That definition fits pretty well, wouldn’t you say?

At St. Ann’s, we pray every week a prayer that contains these phrases: “Help us to love You and to love to serve one another as Jesus taught us. May Your love fill the hearts and homes of our families so the whole world may enjoy the peace and happiness promised by Your Son.” I wonder if we listen to these words as we utter them?

The writings indicate that Jesus taught and practiced kindness, love and forgiveness. Whenever we exercise our right to vote, we should think first about that example.

The only power we have in a democracy is our vote. If we wish to preserve that, we better all vote and we better vote according to our individual consciences, not as some organization, institution or political party dictates to us.
