Blizzard hockey: Alexandria runs all over Twin City

The Blizzard outshot the Steel 69-24 in a 7-1 win.

The Alexandria Blizzard had been hoping to bury a few more pucks to make things easier on themselves after an up-and-down start to the season.

That happened in a big way in a 7-1 win over Twin City last Saturday. The Blizzard dominated the pace of play as much as any team can, outshooting the Steel 69-24.

That led to a 5-1 lead through two periods. The Blizzard put 28 shots on net in the opening frame and led 2-1 after goals from Bryce Mitzel and Ian Eckland. Alexandria ran away with things in the second period as Spencer Peratalo, Nate Metternburg and Ricky Seidel all added to the lead.

Depth was one of the Blizzard’s greatest strengths as an NAHL franchise a year ago. That depth was on display for this team against the Steel as the seven Alexandria goals were scored by seven different players. Kyle Kuntz and Garrett Skinner added goals in the final period as 15 Blizzard players finished with at least one point in the game.

That made things easier on Blizzard goaltender Kyle Miller. He got the win after stopping 23 of the 24 shots he faced. Twin City’s Jared Schletty had 62 saves but allowed six of Alexandria’s seven goals after getting peppered all night.

The win sent the Blizzard into a two-week break on a positive note before another game against the defending NA3HL champions at home. Granite City (12-1, 24 points) will take on Alexandria for the third time this season next Friday at the Runestone Community Center. The Lumberjacks are 2-0 against the Blizzard after a 5-2 win on October 13 and a 3-2 win on September 28.
