Letter - Voting no, thanks to Brandon, Minnesota

As a child, I could see my father active as a volunteer, building an inclusive community. He taught me to take care of my neighbors and that everyone is welcome in “God’s Country.”

To the editor:

As a child, I could see my father active as a volunteer, building an inclusive community. He taught me to take care of my neighbors and that everyone is welcome in “God’s Country.” Like the American Veterans for Equal Rights, I’m voting no.

As a student at Brandon Elementary, I had dedicated teachers, like Mrs. Shea, who taught social lessons in diversity and friendship. These teachers taught me acceptance, respect and equal rights. Like the League of Women Voters, I’m voting no.

St. Ann’s Church taught me that Catholicism is first and foremost a religion of love, not laws. Jesus will always side with love, human dignity and equality. I can’t in good conscience vote to deny Minnesotans any of those. Laws change, love is forever. Like the League of Former Priests for Marriage Equality and Catholics for Marriage Equality, I’m voting no.

I am voting no because this amendment goes against everything Brandon, Minnesota taught me about being a good citizen and loving Christian. For the Bujolds, Cronks, Beers, Swansons, Lankows, Thompsons and 13,718 other same sex couples in Minnesota, please vote no.
