Section 5AA football: Minnewaska earns spot in championshipThe Lakers won their sixth straight game to reach the finals
After opening its season with four straight losses, the Minnewaska Lakers have won six in a row and propelled themselves into the Section 5AA championship.
Their 28-14 win over Paynesville puts them in a matchup with BOLD Saturday at 7 p.m. at Big Cat Stadium on the University of Minnesota-Morris campus for a chance at a state berth. It won’t be an easy task for Minnewaska as the Warriors come in with a 9-0 record. BOLD reached the title game on a last second field goal to edge Benson 23-20.
The Lakers had just 116 yards on the ground. Not much compared to the 279 yards rushing by the Bulldogs, but Minnewaska’s total included three touchdowns – more than enough for the win.
Sam Long, Jack Schultenover and Greg Helander each had one of those touchdowns, with the fourth coming on a pass from Austin Ostrander to Jake Amundson.
As crucial as that offense was, the defense was even more important, holding Paynesville scoreless in the red zone.
Nathan Snider paved the way defensively as he had nine solo tackles and three assists, forcing a fumble and breaking up a pass as well.
The Lakers held a 28-0 lead before the Bulldogs cracked the scoreboard for two scores in the fourth quarter.
