State Class A individual tennis: Osakis' Kraemer drops pair at state

By: Eric Morken, Alexandria Echo Press

Osakis first singles player Taylor Kraemer came up short in a couple matches as she took on the best singles players in Minnesota at the individual state tournament last week.

Kraemer matched up with a familiar foe in Staples-Motley’s Mikayla Wing in the opening round. The two had matched up in the team portion of the tournament two days earlier as Wing made it two straight wins over Kraemer during the week with a 6-2, 6-1 win last Thursday.

That knocked Kraemer to the consolation bracket where she matched up with Katelyn Rice of Eveleth-Gilbert. Rice won the first set 6-0 before having to fight off Kraemer in a 7-5 second set to finish things off.

“Taylor fared better in her matches this year during the individual tournament than a year ago,” head coach Ryan Maddock said. “She is definitely making improvements in her game and had a very competitive second match. It was a great experience for her to play against players of that caliber.”

Kraemer will be back to anchor the singles lineup at the top spot as a senior next season.
